Staircase update

Well it's up. My salvage store finds are getting put to good use. Now the painting can begin. We are having some trouble covering the new newel post because what ever stain they used 100 yrs ago keeps bleeding through the primer we put on. You can see the pink keeps showing up in each of the pictures. It's getting kinda funny now. I think we have put 6 coats of primer on it and it still has some pink coming through...
First coat of primer, and the railing is up with new spindles

second coat of primer

third and maybe fourth  coat of primer

Upstairs railing is done. Looks pretty good.

Counter Tops Are Here

Counter tops!

I can't believe it's finally time for the counter tops!!!! Yay! I have been searching high and low for counter tops that I wanted. My first choice was marble... But I kept looking for a marble look in a different material. Well, come to find out to get granite that looks like marble...it cost twice as much. Corian was also an option that I considered, but again it cost more than actually getting marble. So I ended up at a stone center picking out 2 slabs of carrera marble. I am so happy with the result. It is the exact look I was going for with the other look-a-like materials.

The truck arrived on time...
My pre cut slabs are there on the right
Here are a few before pictures of the cabinets all ready to be covered.

Picture 1

Picture 2
The first slab they pulled out of the truck went right in place, the second was one of the bigger ones that go on either side of the sink.
Large slab for one side of the sink

First piece that went right in!! I LOVE it

You can see here the gray veining that makes marble so unique
Putting the counter tops on the wall cabinets was little challenging. They had to cut into the drywall just a little to get them to fit just right.

Fitting the corner piece

Wall cabinets have counter tops

Looks great

Island is set.
They went around a caulked all the joints and put glue around all the cabinets. They look great!!!

The island might be my favorite!!!!

Now we are ready for the faucet! That will have to be next time. We have been really bust painting trim and then we will be ready to do the floors! We are almost done!

Hex Yes!!!!

Hexagon Floors!!!

You know this flooring used to be just about the only floor you could buy...now...you can't hardly find it anywhere!! I have been in many houses build in the early 1900's and they all had this simple hexagon tile floor. I LOVE it! So we decided it was the style we wanted for the bathrooms and laundry area of the house. I really like how it turned out.

Hexagon Tiles!!

The Mater Bath

I also painted this a grey since it has two big windows.

Laundry room ....

Oh Yeah! Did I mention we finally got the 200 lb. monster hung? Obviously I still need to clean this sink but it is coming together. We just got the faucet a couple of days ago so I should be able to clean it soon

This will serve as a mud room/laundry room....essential when you have 3 kids!

Powder room that is adjacent to the laundry room

Kids bath upstairs..I used the same gray as the master bath

Kids bath...We started painting the trim white....It looks so clean.

We are getting really close to getting done!! I can't wait!

Before I forget... The staircase railing

I have been looking for a newel post to match for like 6 months...Well it was finally time that I HAD to find something so I went back to the salvage store and dug...and dug... And I couldn't believe my eyes! I found a totally chipped, half eaten, looked like it had been stored outside, in really bad shape newel post... that was close enough!!!! So I grabbed it and asked how much? I laughed and said Ummm No....will you take half? They said yes!

Then I had to find a few other pieces for the stairs. I couldn't find anything that matched exactly. But I was able to come really close.
My salvage store finds!!

They don't match...but its close enough!
Here at the top of the stairs where the closet came out over, we need to replace the railing. We will use the ones I found at the salvage store up here and take the 2 up here that match and put them downstairs.

We also took the wood off the stairs that we had down to protect it. They are in pretty good shape.

Just starting on creating the bottom newel post and railing.

Keep checking back!!! We are getting really close!

The Kitchen...'Nuff said!

The Kitchen!!!

So far...I am Loving it!!! We decided on simple white cabinets with shaker style fronts. I just thought they looked most like what might have been in a simple country house. We still have a few more to put up and some shelves but you can see the kitchen so far.

The empty space is for the dishwasher...

The island is in!

I went with a dark island for some contrast. I think I am going to like it!

The space under the hood is for the range..Can't wait!!!

I went with stacked cabinets cause I think they add a little detail.

The love of my kitchen!!!! The farm sink from Kohler.

The space to the left is for the refridgerator

I can't wait for the counter tops to be installed!!!

The Porch and some Paint

The Porch!

It is amazing what some paint can do, isn't it? After we painted the house we were able to finally put the new lights up on the porch. I think that everyone driving by can tell that the house is getting close to being finished. I really like the lights we chose and I feel like they really make the house look finished....Almost

Here are some pictures of the progress we have made, It seems like it was just yesterday that it looked like the first few pictures.
Overgrown front yard with no porch!

Tearing out the massive concrete porch...

No front porch
Getting the supports in for the porch.

The beginning of the porch

Ugh...the snow!!!
Before the second front door was put in.

Ta Da....We restored the second front door on the front of the house

After paint but before the light were added.
What a huge difference

We have light!!!! We actually have a matching pendant that hangs form the ceiling??? I don't know where that picture is?

The outside is coming together. I will update soon so you can see the pendant.

Inside Paint!

I have been busy painting the inside of the house. I have to thank everyone that has helped me, I really appreciate it. I chose an almost white paint for now. The walls are so wavy, I feel if I painted them a dark color it would really show off the uneven walls. So we are sticking to white for now until we can put up some crown molding.

The boys room is coming along... some of the walls still need to be painted but you can see the progress.
